Roulette Betting: Rules, Bet Types, and Strategies in Roulette

Roulette Betting Rules Bet Types Strategies 02

Roulette is one of the classic casino games that continues to gain popularity among gamblers, with more professional and beginner players partaking in roulette games in land-based casinos or online casino in Malaysia and Singapore. This comes as roulette betting is a fairly simple game to play and offers a wide variety of bet categories that provide players great winning chances.

Objective: The game’s objective is to guess which number the spinning ball will stop.

Game Rules: Different coloured chips are used in roulette games to prevent confusion with the bets placed, and the value of the chips is determined by the price the player pays for them.

Players have a multitude of options on how to bet on a roulette game. They can bet on single numbers, adjacent numbers, rows of numbers, colours, and odd or even numbers, among others, and each type of bet they make will have different payouts.

Mechanics: The croupier will let gamblers place their bets on the betting mat.

Players can place bets on what number will come up by laying down chips on a betting mat. They must put their chips in a precise location as this indicates what type of bet they are making. Accordingly, if players wish to place a bet on the same number/s or the same bet types, the chips must be stacked properly.

Types of Roulette Bets

Generally, there are two main categories of roulette bets: Inside Bets and Outside Bets.

Inside Bets

Players place these bets to wager on the numbers inside the roulette wheel (0 to 36). Inside bets are the most well-known among roulette players, as these offer big potential profits. However, the higher payout also means that the odds of winning are reduced; hence, these bets are not suitable for beginner gamblers or, in general, those who want to avoid significant risks.

Street Bet17:18.10%
Square Bet8:110.80%

Snake Bet35:132.40%
  • Single Number Bet

Single Number Bet, also called Straight-Up Bet, is placed on any number from 1 to 36. Players can also opt to place their bet on zero and place as many straight-up bets as they want.

On this type of inside bet, players are expected to place their chips in the box of their chosen number.

  • Split Bet

Split bets are combination bets covering two adjacent numbers on the roulette table layout. In this type of inside bet, players are expected to place their chips on the line between the two adjacent numbers they want to bet on.

When placing split bets, it is advisable to bet on two numbers that are adjacent on the table layout but are not located next to one another on the roulette wheel.

  • Street Bet

Street bet, also known as Row bet, covers three consecutive numbers on any given row on the roulette table layout. For example, 1, 2, and 3, or 22, 23, and 24. Consequently, players have to put their chips on the outer borderline of their preferred row of numbers to place this type of bet.

  • Square Bet

The Square Bet, or Corner Bet, is another combination bet covering four adjacent numbers on the table layout. In this bet, players must place their chips in the centre of the cluster of four numbers, where the vertical and horizontal lines of the four adjacent numbers intersect.

  • Six Line

Six Line Bets, also known as Quint Bets and Double Street, cover six consecutive numbers on the roulette table layout. In this bet, players can bet on two consecutive rows, and they have to place their chips on the outer borderline between their chosen rows of numbers.

  • Snake Bet

Snake bets cover the 12 red numbers presented in a zigzag pattern on the roulette table layout: 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. However, this type of bet may not always be available; but if a casino or croupier accepts snake bets, players must place their chips in the lower corner of the box that corresponds to 34.

Outside Bets

These bets are placed based on other properties or factors surrounding the numbers. For instance, players can place bets based on the numbers’ colour, position on the roulette table layout, and whether they are even or odd.

Outside bets offer smaller payouts compared to inside bets. But, the former still provides better odds of winning than the latter.

  • Column Bet

Column bets cover an entire column consisting of 12 numbers with a single chip. To place this type of bet, players must place their chips at the boxes labelled “2:1,” located at the farthest end of the number layout, corresponding to the column they want to bet on.

  • Dozen

Dozen bets cover definite groups of numbers: the 1st Dozen covers numbers 1 to 12; the 2nd Dozen covers numbers 13 to 24; and, the 3rd Dozen covers numbers 25 to 36. Players can place dozen bets by putting their chip on one of the three boxes labelled “1st 12, “2nd 12,” and “3rd 12.” And, they can also wager on two out of the three dozens.

  • High or Low Bet

In this type of bet, players guess whether the ball will land on a high or low number. Accordingly, to place a High or Low bet, players have to put their chips on the section labelled “1 – 18” for Low Numbers and “19 – 36” for High Numbers.

  • Red or Black Bet

In Red or Black Bets, the individual number in the pocket of the roulette wheel is irrelevant, and players will bet on whether the ball will end up in a red or black pocket. Moreover, the red or black bet is often represented by a red and a black diamond on most roulette table layouts. But on some tables, the words “Red” and “Black” are written, or the boxes are filled with the actual colours.

  • Odd or Even Bet

This type of bet is another outside bet type suitable for beginner or recreational players. In essence, roulette players will only have to guess whether the ball will land on an odd or even number. On the roulette table layout, the odd or even bets are placed on each side of the red or black betting boxes.
